A3 Reporting and Problem SolvingA3 Reports - One small tool in Lean, one giant leap in lean thinking.

If you are not aware, A3 Reports are one-page reports used for documenting the necessary information needed for progress reporting and decision-making that take their name from the size of paper they are written on.  A3 Problem Solving is when you structure your continuous improvement or problem solving methodology around the structure of the A3 Report.

What that simple definition doesn't tell you is that A3 reports are universally adaptable, and are now being used in all types of organisations in all types of industries. Properly used, an A3 report clarifies the writer's thinking, emphasizes the important aspects of a problem and the actions required, and ensures completion of the PDCA cycle to ensure changes stick.

But that is just the first-order function of the A3 Report.  A3 Reports, as used by Toyota, are the key source for operational learning. In other words, the A3 is way to solve problems in a way that generates knowledge while helping the people doing the work 'learn how to learn'. The A3 is a tactic for ingraining the deeper method of thinking that is at the core of Lean.

Participants will take home A3 templates, an A3 reporting 'cheat sheet', and will see the proper origami needed to easily save and and access A3 reports in a world sized for A4's. We will also discuss such points as:

  • Using A3's as a foundation for coaching for development
  • How to use A3's to get away from the "keeping my head above water" level of busy-ness that some businesses see as normal.
