OERt CIWG - Short Interval Control

SIRF Roundtables presents
Operational Excellence Roundtable
Common Interest Workgroup

Proudly hosted by Diageo

SIRF Roundtables in New South Wales currently comprises in excess of 40 progressive organisations that are willing to network and share their best practices in a peer to peer learning environment, specialising in Operational Excellence and Industrial Maintenance.

The ‘Common Interest Work Group’ (CIWG) events are for operators/technical specialists looking to discuss with peers, specific topics they are working on, in and around their field of excellence.

In this Common Interest Work Group we will be looking at Short Interval Control.

Quick and focused reviews of performance data during the shift enable ongoing course corrections and small-scale fixes that collectively result in significant improvements in performance. Look at the immediate past to guide actions for the immediate future. This is a process for driving production improvements during the shift. Each shift is split into short intervals of time (usually two to four hours initially), within which operators use data to identify and implement improvement actions. These improvement actions may be countermeasures to ongoing or emerging problems, or they may be actions to improve existing production.

It is sometimes described as a form of Kaizen as it encourages teams to work together to achieve regular, incremental improvements to the manufacturing process. The process can be seen as an extension to the daily production meetings and introduces a clear strategy for issues to be addressed as they occur. The need for real time data is crucial for this process to work effectively. It’s like measuring the pulse of the operations and taking action as needed.
