Confined Space and Group Isolation

Confined Space and Group Isolation

Confined Space & Group Isolation
Confined SpaceMany workplaces contain areas that are considered "Confined Spaces" because while they are not necessarily designed for people, they are large enough for workers to enter and perform certain jobs. A confined space also has limited or restricted means for entry or exit and is not designed for continuous occupancy. Confined spaces include, but are not limited to, tanks, vessels, silos, storage bins, hoppers, vaults, pits, manholes, tunnels, equipment housings, ductwork, pipelines, etc.

Group Isolation - Whilst some confined space entries are straight forward, many require stringent group isolation procedures to ensure safety from other process and energy sources. Some possible topics of discussion:

  • ISO 9001:2015Confined or not confined space? How to make sure you get it right
  • Labeling, Signs, Locks, and Barriers
  • Standards / Compliance to standards
  • Confined space entry permit process
  • Issuing of permits
  • Close out of permits (accounting for everyone)
  • Work Practices (tag-teams, shift changes etc)
  • Improving work methods in confined spaces to reduce risk
  • Group isolation procedures
  • Identifying hazards and isolation required
  • Assessing and controlling risks
  • Maintaining control measures
  • Eliminating the need for entry (arguably the best method available)

‘Common Interest Work Group’ (CIWG) events are designed to provide a safe environment for open discussion with peers on the topic of interest they are working on, in and around. There will be no vendor companies in attendance at this meeting.   Agenda
