Work Instruction and Training

TWI ManualDuring WWII, the Training Within Industry program, scientifically developed in the US and then extended throughout Europe and Asia, systematically taught front-line supervisors how to train new workers in performing complex tasks. It was especially well received in Japan, where TWI formed the basis of the kaizen culture in industry. In the foreword to Donald Dinero's book Training Within Industry: The Foundation of Lean, John Shook relates a story in which a Toyota trainer brought out an old copy of a TWI service manual to prove to him that American workers at NUMMI could be taught using the "Japanese" methods used at Toyota.

Join your peers as we discuss our modern best practice for training new individuals, and compare the methods with those described in the TWI's Job Instruction course which Job Instructioneventually was expanded out to include hospitals, offices and farms. The process for instructing new people has been around for seventy years - are we still doing it as well as possible, or have we improved on it? At the very minimum you will be able to compare your training for newbies to other companies programs, and should be able to adopt some new best practices.
