The Denso site tour will include a presentation from some of the Denso team on their Lean journey and a focus on their TPM implementation, Kaizen process and Standard Work systems.

Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) has been a very important tool, particularly for equipment intensive manufacturing. It is a key means for increasing machine  Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), and a vital step in enabling better flow.  The essence of TPM was developed in Denso. a tier one automotive supplier in the Toyota group during the 1960’s and 70’s in Japan. A central thrust of TPM is the complete elimination of what are called the “six major machine losses” i.e. breakdowns, set up time, cycle time losses, minor stoppages, scrap and rework, and yield or start up losses.

Kaizen or Continuous Improvement is an activity where everyone , everywhere , everyday makes improvements to their work to make it safer, easier, more right first time, less wasteful and more reliable.

Standard Work means that the activity of each worker is highly specified to content , sequence, timing , location, outcome with a built in designed test to ensure it was correctly performed. Workers know why the elements are performed the way they are specificied. It provides a basis for Continuous Improvement.

After the site tour we will have a chance for feedback and an opportunity to discuss elements of the manufacturing excellence seen.
