A report in the Sydney Morning Herald ( Manufacturing poor on power )  States that Australia’s manufacturing industry is the most energy-intensive in the world, and was the only developed country to see an increase in energy consumption between 2000 and 2015, the International Energy Agency said.

Australia’s manufacturing industry’s actual energy consumption was well below other major manufacturing nations, such as the US, but was poorly utilised.

This poor energy usage was also driven by historically-low energy prices, which saw some businesses focus on investment in areas of the businesses other than energy efficiency.

Businesses that built their processes around $3 to $5 a gigajoule gas prices are now being asked to pay up between $12 and $20 a gigajoule.

This has left much of Australian industry facing intense pain as many medium-sized food and non-food manufacturers have seen prices increases by 20 per cent recently or 100 per cent over last 5 years.

The real challenge for industry now is that the price of energy changed so fast for the manufacturing sector that it is at risk of functioning as less of a wake-up call and instead a complete shock to the system.

Improving energy efficiency is now an essential part of competitiveness for more businesses than ever before.

This roundtable will explore what manufactures are doing to meet this challenge.

What steps are being taken at site and corporate level?

What energy usage data is being collected and monitored and how is this used to drive change.

What strategies are being employed to buy energy?

Generate your own, Co or tri Gen, Solar, Biogas. Who is doing this?

What government assistance exists to help with this transition?

These questions and more will be the focus of the days conversation and presentations.
