Quick Changeover (Single Minute Exchange of Dies)
One Day Workshop - Hosted by Sunbeam Foods

SMED Quick ChangeoverThe best approach is to dig out and eliminate problems where they are assumed not to exist. — Shigeo Shingo

Changing over equipment from one product to another in minimal time (like a pit stop for a race car) produces many important benefits, including better teamwork, reduced downtime, reduced inventory, and better response to changes in customer demand. Reducing inventory both reduces cost and exposes problems with our production systems that we didn't know existed. If you want to make smaller runs economical then you need Quick Changeover, or SMED.

SMED, or Single Minute Exchange of Dies, and the reasons for needing it are a core aspect of Lean Thinking. Before Lean, economic order quantities (EOQ) ruled the production schedule. With SMED and Lean, the customer rules the production schedule.

Participants in this one day workshop will learn and apply the skills needed for reducing changeover times and will also learn how to apply these skills in their own work environment. The course will cover all aspects of SMED and will also learn how to measure it using OEE. Participants will gain a deep understanding of the concepts through application to a simulation, and they will leave with an action plan for beginning to implement the program in their own workplace.

Learning Objectives include:Quick Change Over (SMED)

  • Understand the goals of quick changeover
  • Learn the eight rules for quick changeover
  • Experience the five steps of quick changeover in a simulated changeover
  • Be ready to lead a SMED kaizen event in your own plant
  • Be able to define and measure Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), including changeover time
  • Understand the eight wastes and how SMED helps to eliminate them
