Greasing Frequency and Quantity

Richard from Rio Tinto indicated that typically their motors are greased every 6 months. Northparkes also used 6 month lubrication frequency. The hotter a bearing runs the more frequent lubrication is required. Only a few shots of grease is required for smaller motors and in general the quantity of grease added should be relative to the size of the bearings. Where grease relief ports are used the volume of added grease should be between 5% and 15% of the internal bearing volume. Rio Tinto suggested the use of Shell Stamina RL2 as a good universal motor grease.

It was suggested by Sydney water that motor that have sealed bearing (eg. < 4hp) and can not be re-lubricated, need to be changed out every 4 to 5 year if in-service failure needs to be avoided (See appendix 1). Rio Tinto indicated that they use sealed bearings for motors under 15hp.
