Noel from Blue Circle Southern Cement indicated that environmental dust (cement) entering motors is a significant problem in his plant. OneSteel indicated that they can have problems as their environmental dust in their steel plant can be conductive. Contamination by carbon dust was discussed in the section on variable speed DC motors.

Contamination of motors by moisture or water entry can be a serious problem especially with non-sealed designs. Operational wash-down practices around motors needs to be controlled. Also it was mentioned about the potential for problems with water cooled windings.
